Lone Star Search & Rescue

I volunteered with a Texas‑based 501(c)(3) K‑9 Search and Rescue team, supporting their mission to assist law enforcement and emergency responders in locating missing persons across wilderness and urban environments. The organization deploys trained volunteers, certified K9 units, and specialized search teams, all offered at no cost to agencies or families. I contributed to a compassionate, mission‑driven effort that also provides on‑site support to loved ones during critical moments.

(problem)

Lone Star SAR lacked a cohesive digital presence to clearly communicate their mission, team capabilities, and how agencies or families could request their services in time‑sensitive situations.

(goal)

Design a clear, trustworthy, and accessible web experience that communicates the organization's mission, showcases their teams, and provides a direct path for agencies and families to request assistance.

(my role)

UX Designer (Volunteer)

  • Volunteered as UX designer to create the full digital presence for Lone Star Search & Rescue
  • Designed the site structure and navigation to serve two distinct audiences: calling agencies and general visitors
  • Created clear, empathetic content layouts for sensitive use cases including missing persons support
  • Designed pages for team capabilities, real stories, affiliations, and donation pathways
  • Applied accessible design principles to ensure the site is usable in high‑stress situations

(user research)

  • Gathered requirements through discussions with team leadership to understand audience needs and organizational priorities
  • Identified two primary user types: law enforcement agencies seeking to request services and families seeking support
  • Reviewed comparable nonprofit and emergency response websites to understand content and trust‑building patterns

(key considerations)

  • Clarity and speed are critical — users may be under stress and need information fast
  • The site must establish credibility and trust for both emergency responders and affected families
  • Donation and volunteer pathways must be prominent but never overshadow the core mission
